D-backs' Newman would approve of changes to strike zone calls

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Kevin Newman said that he'd be all for changes to how MLB umpires call the strike zone after seeing manager Torey Lovullo and teammate Joc Pederson get ejected Monday versus the Cincinnati Reds over an incorrectly called strikeout. “I'm for it,” Newman told Burns & Gambo on Tuesday. If there isn't an automated strike zone system coming, Newman supports a grading system for umpires based on their performances.

Kevin Newman’s two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a four-hit night and gave the Arizona Diamondbacks a 6-5 victory over the reeling Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Newman had a pair of doubles and a single before coming to the plate in the ninth against Alexis Diaz (1-2), who had loaded the bases with a hit batsman and two walks. Newman lined the pitch to shallow right to score Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Gabriel Moreno.

Irvin sharp again for the Orioles, and Kimbrel pitches in the 7th inning of a 4-2 win over Arizona

Cole Irvin pitched into the sixth inning in another effective start, and a reshuffled bullpen held on for the Baltimore Orioles in a 4-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night. Struggling reliever Craig Kimbrel was taken out of the closer's role for this game, but he worked a perfect seventh inning. Cionel Pérez came on and hit pinch-hitter Joc Pederson with a pitch before Eugenio Suárez hit a routine grounder to end the threat.
