Panthers sign D Leopold to 1-year deal

Defenseman Jordan Leopold, acquired in the deal that sent the rights to defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to Calgary, signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers on Thursday. The move came on the second day of free agency, one day after Florida assistant general manager Randy Sexton had said that the chances of signing Leopold appeared "remote." Panthers Team Report Jul 3, 2009

The Panthers were very active at the draft, making a deal with Calgary that brought them a third-round pick as well as trading with Los Angeles to secure two more mid-round picks.

The Calgary trade was what had people talking, however, as Florida sent the negotiating rights to All-Star defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to the Flames in exchange for the third round pick and the negotiating rights to pending free agent Jordan Leopold.

Florida signed Leopold to a one-year deal on July 2, and the Flames were able to secure Bouwmeester to a long-term deal.

When the free agency period opened, Florida was active, although the team doesn't appear to be any better off than it was when last season ended. ...More
